Technology Has Changed the TV Stand

24 April 2008

black tv standTV stands, audio racks, and entertainment centers have evolved with the changes in television technology. The days when televisions were considered a stand alone piece of furniture are long gone. Compared to the TV sets built just a few years ago, modern television sets are very different. The physical enclosure has changed, just as technological advances in television design have enhanced picture quality

Televisions became commercially available in the nineteen forties and the basic technology has revolved around the picture tube. The picture tube is a large cathode ray tube with a series of electron guns in rear of the tube. The electron guns shoot electrons at the front of the tube, which is coated with a fluorescent material. The fluorescent material causes the electrons to diffuse, the fluorescent material glows and through a series of signal modulations, a visible image can be seen.

An older CRT television that measures twenty six inches diagonally may be as deep as twenty four inches. Compare that to a new high definition television, which might only seven or eight inches deep.

The Digital Wars Morph through High Definition DVDs

02 February 2008

Blu-ray versus HD-DVDBack in 1994 when Sony/Philips technology released the first Digital Video Disc (DVD) digital technology’s goal was to enable a world united by one language.  With the advent of high definition DVDs, the war continues as to which format will replace standard DVDs in the future. Warner Bros. Entertainment recently announced their decision to support Blue-ray technology for high definition DVDs. But rival format, HD DVD, may still have a chance of survival though, because it’s being backed by DreamWorks, Paramount and Universal.

“We are getting close to the spontaneous emergence of global network-based virtual awareness. In a very short period of time, the worlds of printing and publishing changed dramatically, and as the Internet wakes up, technology continues to congeal into one global interconnected network,” says the author of The Extreme Future, James Canton.

What is the difference between HD DVD and Blue-ray? “The difference is that they are different formats of discs that are used to deliver content to the end user. Both formats support high definition video, and have nothing to do with resolution,” says one DVD duplication services provider, Asheesh Barman, of Acutrack, Inc.

There is confusion about the video resolution of each format. Both formats support high definition video format. High definition video is what standard definition DVD video quality was to VHS video quality back in the old days. High definition video is 720 lines as compared to 1080 lines on the TV screen. By comparison, the now old standard NTSC format used in the US and North America is only 480 lines of resolution.

HD DVD is easier and less expensive to manufacture, and the interactive component which was co-developed by Microsoft Toshiba and Disney, is much easier to use. The value is in authoring capabilities because the discs are not as expensive.

Classic Television Show DVD Popularity on the Rise

25 November 2007

By: Ben Anton

I Love Lucy television showIn recent years, it has become a growing trend to buy and watch classic television shows on DVD for your family entertainment. The availability of some of the all-time favorite classic TV shows on DVD and video has become pervasive throughout the U.S. This allows families to not only catch up on the past seasons of the television shows that they might have missed, but to go back to the classics that we and our parents grew up watching. It is now easier than ever to find seasons of shows that were produced 30 or 40 years ago, right alongside the DVDs of the television shows that are currently on the air. America seems to have become infatuated with remembering the characters and situations produced during the early years of television.  What are the reasons for the increased popularity of classic television shows?

Classic television enthusiasts represent a large market of consumers. There were many classic sitcoms and variety shows that were aired between the 50s, 60s and 70s, that represent not only a large generation of viewers but a very powerful time in American history. They speak for the events of that age and include social and political commentary that goes right along with when they were made. Therefore, they are nostalgic entertainment and fun to relive. For those that watched these shows when they originally aired, classic TV DVDs allow them to relive that time in their life. For those that were too young to watch them when they first ran, DVDs allow them to appreciate the classics as new entertainment.

Extended Warranties – Should I or Shouldn’t I?

29 September 2007

 By: Johnny Waymire

lcd tvWhen making a purchase as large and expensive as a flat-panel LCD TV, you may be considering the Extended Warranty option. Despite any qualms you might have, it may very well be a good idea to purchase one.

Although the manufacturer tries to eliminate all defects from their televisions, nothing can be 100%.  Some products have complicated and brand-new technology that could fail. For example, LCD displays have several ” transistors” that can fail, which leads to pixels failing. This failure rate is usually small “0.00008% for a 1024×768 television, for example” but still present.

The Benefits of Using HDMI 1.3 Cable

24 September 2007

 By: Ben Anton

home theater systemThe HDMI 1.3 cable is the newest version of the multiple multimedia interface cable that can be used to connect a number of electronic devices into the same interface. Compared to past models of the cable, which have changed relatively little compared to their predecessors, the 1.3 version has an array of new features that makes it the most adaptable of the bunch. But just what are the real benefits of using the HDMI 1.3 cable compared to the others? You would be surprised, I’m sure, to learn of all the ways that this new version will expand your multimedia interface and make it easier for you to combine your electronics.

To understand how this HDMI cable is going to help you, let’s first talk about Digital Visual Interface (DVI). This is an uncompressed digital connection scheme that was actually originally developed for a network of personal computers. It was to be a low-cost, high-bandwidth digital connection between PCs and digital monitors, so that you could view your work on the best of television sets. Now it is the most widely used digital display interface in the computer industry. What does all this mean for your home theater system? Well, it means that you can include the DVI with it, especially by using DVI connections on projectors, monitors, and advanced DVD players, such as the new HD-DVD players.
