Extended Warranties – Should I or Shouldn’t I?

29 September 2007

 By: Johnny Waymire

lcd tvWhen making a purchase as large and expensive as a flat-panel LCD TV, you may be considering the Extended Warranty option. Despite any qualms you might have, it may very well be a good idea to purchase one.

Although the manufacturer tries to eliminate all defects from their televisions, nothing can be 100%.  Some products have complicated and brand-new technology that could fail. For example, LCD displays have several ” transistors” that can fail, which leads to pixels failing. This failure rate is usually small “0.00008% for a 1024×768 television, for example” but still present.

A multitude of accessories are available to make your flat panel viewing experience more enjoyable.

Antenna and Tuner

The first thing you will need is a TV antenna, used to amplify, clarify, and optimize the signal for your TV.  After all, you want to view more than a TV signal, right?  If so, make sure to get a tuner.

Cables

tv cablesCables are another necessity for your flat panel TV.  Often, cables are not bundled with your components, which include a source for the TV/video signal, and an audio signal.  This means you will need to buy the cables separately.  And please, spend the few extra bucks to upgrade your cheaper cables.  Your power and signals going in and coming out of your components will reward you by being stronger and steadier.

Speakers

speakersDo you want to make viewing your flat panel TV more like a night out at the movie theater?  If so, you should consider purchasing speakers and subwoofers to create stereo sound.  What a way to boost your TV viewing experience!  You will feel like you are right in the middle of the action!

Universal Remote

universal remoteWow!  With all the components hooked up to your flat panel TV, you are bound to have at least three remote controls floating around.  And honestly, can you keep straight which remote goes to which device?  Investing in a Universal Remote Control would be an excellent idea.  Universal Remote Controls allow you to program for several components on one remote.  Now your VCR, your DVD, your cable, your satellite, and anything else you might have hooked up to your flat screen TV will work from one remote.  What is the best part of only having one remote?  No more fumbling around with remotes or searching for remotes under couches, chair cushions, and in the garbage!

Wall Mounting

tv wall mountSome people choose to mount their flat panel TVs on their wall.  To do this, you need to have mounts and braces.  An attractive feature of some of the mounts is that they allow your flat screen TV to turn or swivel.  Now you can watch TV from any seat in the family room!  Other people prefer to use special flat screen furniture, such as TV stands, carts, trolleys, or shelves to set up their home viewing area.  These types of options do double-duty.  The keep your home theater neat and organized, and provide additional storage for the other devices that are hooked up to your TV, not to mention storage for DVDs, CDs, etc.

Surge Protector

surge protectorWith such expensive and delicate equipment at the mercy of any storms or power surges that may come through your house, you will want to invest in a good surge protector.  The more expensive surge protectors may even protect your dial-up connection, your DSL connection, or your cable connection.  You will be able to leave the house and not worry about unexpected surges frying your electronic devices.

Screen Protector

screen protectorWhile flat panel TVs provide an excellent viewing experience, there are a few drawbacks.  One is that the screens are delicate and pricy to replace.  Another drawback is that the flat panel screens often cause glare and eyestrain to people who sit in front of them for many hours at a time.  Luckily, there is a fix for these problems.  You can purchase a screen protector to prevent damage to the screen and reduce eyestrain.  Some screen protectors will even blur the screen from a certain angle to keep prying eyes from seeing whatever is on the screen.

24 September 2007

 By: Ben Anton

home theater systemThe HDMI 1.3 cable is the newest version of the multiple multimedia interface cable that can be used to connect a number of electronic devices into the same interface. Compared to past models of the cable, which have changed relatively little compared to their predecessors, the 1.3 version has an array of new features that makes it the most adaptable of the bunch. But just what are the real benefits of using the HDMI 1.3 cable compared to the others? You would be surprised, I’m sure, to learn of all the ways that this new version will expand your multimedia interface and make it easier for you to combine your electronics.

To understand how this HDMI cable is going to help you, let’s first talk about Digital Visual Interface (DVI). This is an uncompressed digital connection scheme that was actually originally developed for a network of personal computers. It was to be a low-cost, high-bandwidth digital connection between PCs and digital monitors, so that you could view your work on the best of television sets. Now it is the most widely used digital display interface in the computer industry. What does all this mean for your home theater system? Well, it means that you can include the DVI with it, especially by using DVI connections on projectors, monitors, and advanced DVD players, such as the new HD-DVD players.

Satellite TV Channel ‘JANMAT’ Banned For One Month

22 September 2007

host of a chat show on JanmatThe Information & Broadcasting Ministry has prohibited the transmission/re-transmission of satellite channel ‘Janmat’ (assumed name Live India) on all platforms throughout the country. The ban effective from today will be up to 20.10.2007. The prohibition has been imposed in terms of the Sub-Section (2) of Section 20 of the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act, 1995.

It had come to the notice of the Central Government that some Cable Operators in the country through their Cable Television Networks had been transmitting/re-transmitting the satellite channel namely ‘Janmat’ (assumed name Live India), which telecast an admittedly doctored sting operation on Smt. Uma Khurana, teacher, Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Darya Ganj, Delhi. The telecast of said sting operation was defamatory, deliberate, false and contained suggestive innuendos and half-truths; incited violence and contained content against maintenance of law and order. It criticized, maligned and slandered an individual in person and it denigrated children and was irresponsibly aired by the channel without exercise of due diligence in preliminary verification of the facts of the case. Therefore, the Central Government thought it necessary to prohibit transmission or re-transmission of the said channel throughout the country.

Understanding HDMI

By: Neil MacLeod

HDMIThe HDMI standard was created by many of the leading manufacturers, these include: Panasonic, Hitachi, Philips, Sony, Thomson (RCA), Silicon Image and Toshiba. HDMI is not just a used in video transfer, it also has embedded multi-channel audio support.
A lot of people out there find all these new “options” that have come with HD technology very confusing (i.e. Deep colour and DVD audio).  So below is a brief guide to some of the options that are available below.

Deep colour:  This in simple terms allows you HD television to go from a display using millions of colours to a display of billions of colours.  It also increases the contrast ratio, therefore allowing more grey shades between white and black. Colour banding lines are completely eliminated and this gives the viewer unrivalled colour accuracy and vividness due to the smooth transitions and grading between colour and tone.

Understanding The Dish On Dish Network

13 September 2007

By: MIKE SELVON

Dish Network dishSome people are content to sit back and enjoy their new satellite network dish with no concern for how it actually works. Others are not so passive. Were you the kind of kid who wasn’t satisfied until you had taken everything apart and figured out how it worked? If this sounds like you, then here are a few basic explanations of how your satellite TV service works.

Satellite TV systems are the result of many other kinds of satellite technology. Everything from radio signals to police communication devices use satellite dishes to communicate with satellites that are orbiting the planet.

The signals transmitted use your network dish to eliminate the need for thousands of miles of wire and cable that are ordinarily used to transmit any kind of data signal, whether it is a phone conversation or your favorite television station.

Satellite TV service occurs because of the dish’s shape, known as “parabolic”. Parabolic essentially means that it is a conic section, or an inverted curve, generated by a circular dip into a surface of some sort.

There’s all sorts of math equations that can accurately describe this better, but if you’re ever driven past a satellite dish or stared at your own, you know what parabolic is.

This parabolic surface provides satellite TV service in that it sends the signal and reflects it to the focal point, usually the satellite. The network dish uses a low-noise block down converter or LNB to convert the signals your dish gets from the satellite into electric energy, thus turning the electromagnetic energy from the satellite into television channels for you to watch.

Most of the dishes used for television purposes in today’s day and age are in a fixed position, but many other dishes are not fixed. They actually move to get clearer shots at the signal.

If you have an Echostar dish from DISH Network, that dish does not need to move to get the signal because of its design.
